Major Contracting is a full service infrastructure improvement company. We specialize in concrete paving, sidewalks, curbs, driveways, water main, sewer and earth work. Since our founding in 1978, we have worked for many commercial contractors and most municipalities in the Metro Detroit area, of which we are proud of our longstanding history. As evidence of this, we are a leading infrastructure improvement contractor in Southeastern Michigan. Our History — Building Metro Detroit For Over 40 Years
Major Contracting Group was started in 1978 originally as Major Cement Company a small concrete contractor. Alfredo Scappaticci originally worked for Major Cement Company, and in 1981, he purchased a percentage of the company’s stock, setting up headquarters in the City of Detroit in 1981. Over the next twenty years, Major Contracting Group (formerly known as Major Cement Company) worked on many concrete projects, which included the removal and replacement of curbs, sidewalks, drives, concrete patches, and asphalt. We’ve worked with many municipalities and some General Contractors in Southeast Michigan, completing all sorts of civil concrete construction projects with the City of Detroit as one of our largest customers.
Major Contracting has performed small underground projects since our start in 1978, but in 2014 we were awarded our first major water main replacement project. Major Contracting would continue to grow its site utility underground division by bidding and winning water main and storm sewer replacement projects.
In 2017 Major Contracting was fortunate to acquire Imperial Construction as a part of its services and assets. Imperial Construction was started by the Giancarlo’s and had been in operation for over 50 years. They were also headquartered in the City of Detroit, with DWSD as their biggest customer. Major Contracting acquired Imperial’s headquarters, which is on the Eastside of Detroit, and now uses it as our Eastside facility. By acquiring Imperial Construction, we not only added a significant amount of equipment to support our underground division, but we also added a great group of talented individuals with an abundance of underground experience who joined our team to strengthen and grow our underground division.
In 2021 we officially evolved into more than a concrete contractor and officially took on the name Major Contracting. Even though civil concrete construction is the larger percentage of our work — our team can handle excavation, underground/site utility work, and General Contractor Construction Management services as well. As a civil contracting company, we knew that Major Cement Co didn’t encompass all of our available services.
Today, we continue to invest in Detroit and relocate our headquarters to I-96 and Greenfield, where we have over 20,000 sqft of building space and almost 7 acres of land to operate from, all in addition to our Eastside facility. We are a long-time Union contractor and signatory to Local 1191 Laborers, Local 514 Finishers, and Local 314 Operators. We are proud to be a Detroit Headquartered business and proud to have many Detroiters on our team.
